Rhayader event 27 - 28th May 2006

The event will be based at the Rugby Club in Rhayader which will be signposted from Friday afternoon onwards.

Camping will be available (included in the entry fee) from Friday night through to Monday morning at the Rugby Club in Rhayader.
The ride will start at 10am on Sunday the 28th May '06 at the Rugby Club in Rhayader.
Registration will be open from 12am (noon) - 8pm on Saturday and from 7 - 9am on Sunday.

CycleActive, the UK’s leading mountain bike holiday and training company, will be at the Merida Marathon series in 2006. Their expert instructors will be with us right through the weekends, running a whole programme of events for all participants and their families. You could also win some fantastic holidays as prizes.

On Saturdays the focus is on the riders preparing for the marathons the next day.

If you want to develop your bike handling skills, improving control, balance and reactions then sign up for a 30 minute ‘Trials to Trails’ session. If you want to get out for some more practical, on-the-trail training then join one of the ‘Skills Development Rides’, which usually last between one and two hours depending upon the riders and their needs. They’ll also be running a drop in ‘Bike Setup Clinic’ to help ensure that rider and machine are matched up correctly, ready for the next day.

On Sunday the focus is on families and fun.

There will be skills instruction for kids, they can try the latest Merida bikes on the ‘CycleActive Junior Skills Track’ and there’ll be lots of chances for less experienced adults to develop their riding too.

Start number break down:
Long course (approximately 100km) riders will get start numbers from 001 – 999
Middle course (approximately 75km) riders will get start numbers from 1000 – 1999
Short course (approximately 50km) riders will get start numbers from 2000 – 2999
Mini Marathon (approximately 25km) riders will get start numbers from 3000 – 3999

RHAYADER
Rhayader (Ray-ad-er) is the oldest town in Mid-Wales dating back to the 5th century, although Neolithic remains show people have been here far longer than this. Set some 700ft above sea level in the beautiful Upper Wye Valley, Rhayader is cupped by hills rising to over 1,500 feet. It is the first town on the River Wye, lying just 20 miles from its source on the Plynlimon range to the north (Welsh spelling - Pumlumon). The town is also the gateway to the spectacular beauty of the flooded Elan Valley.
Just two hours from Cardiff, Manchester and Birmingham and only four from London, the town lies at a natural crossroads and it has always been a natural stopping point for locals and travellers – from the Romans, who had a stopover camp in the Elan Valley, through Monks journeying between the abbeys of Strata Florida and Abbeycwmhir, and drovers taking their livestock to far off markets and returning with goods and news.

Nestling among the unspoilt peaks of the Cambrian mountains, today its friendly hotels, B&Bs and camp sites provide the ideal base for outdoor activities such as bird-watching, pony trekking, walking, caravanning, fishing and of course mountain biking. Rhayader is the ideal venue for an enduro mountain bike event nestling in between a huge expanse of open hill country to the west and forestry to the east it offers everything a challenging and enjoyable course can ask for.
The Merida100 route runs out to the east of town into the forest and open countryside. The run out along a country lane is an ideal warm up of 7km rising gradually from Rhayader until it climbs into the forest. A further stretch of farm track and fire road helps to spread the riders out before the first section of technical singletrack opens itself up to the riders.
